As I’ve been contemplating how to grow my garden the most efficient way, I came across a book called “Square Food Gardening Method” (SFG). The method revolves around garden boxes. Like you, I want an awesome garden with little maintenance and SFG with garden boxes seemed like the perfect solution. The problem is the cost in buying the lumber and the time in making the boxes. When discussing it with my wife and researching the cost of lumber right now, it almost didn’t seem worth it. In the SFG book it suggests going dumpster diving on construction sites for 2×6 boards. However, there is not a lot of construction going on around where I live. And having built homes, I know there is not a lot of 2×6 scrap worth using.
I was trying to figure out the solution when my buddy, Spencer, shared with me this awesome little secret….
Vinyl fencing contractors have perfect garden boxes that they have been throwing away!!
Vinyl fencing contractors have perfectly built 2ft by 4ft and 4ft by 4ft 2×6 boxes. The vinyl comes packaged in these boxes. There is even a plastic or metal band for added strength. I called up a local vinyl-fencing contractor, complete stranger- no personal connection, and they had 10 of them ready to go to the dump. I went by that day and filled my trailer with the boxes. In just one trip to their warehouse, my garden boxes are ready for planting (more on that later).
